5:05 a.m.: Biden still refuses to call for a ceasefire

Biden has been blunt in defending his refusal to call for a ceasefire in Gaza, arguing that Hamas poses an ongoing threat to Israel and that Israeli forces seek to avoid civilian casualties. A letter signed by 500 government officials was sent to Joe Biden on Tuesday protesting his unconditional support for Israel in the Gaza Strip. All signatories are anonymous, but all belong to the largest U.S. federal agencies. It's a sign of growing discontent with Biden's pro-Israel line in his own camp.

5:00 a.m.: Violent pro-Palestinian protest in front of Democratic Party headquarters

Clashes broke out Wednesday night (local time) between dozens of pro-Palestinian protesters and police outside the Democratic Party's national headquarters in Washington, forcing the closure of nearby U.S. congressional offices. "Our officers are working to contain approximately 150 people who are protesting illegally and violently," near party offices, the Capitol Police said in a message on X (formerly Twitter). "Officers are making arrests," the police added, adding that six wounded members of their ranks were treated for "minor cuts" and even "punches." Elected officials who were in the offices of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) at the time were escorted out of the building by police to safety. The demonstrators are demanding a ceasefire and an end to Israel's military operation in the Gaza Strip.
